What happens to plastic when it can't be recycled anymore?

Recycling is a massive subject, one that isn’t black and white, there are a lot of grey areas.

Recycling plays an important role, but we need to be better educated about recycling and shift our mentality towards reducing single-use first and foremost.

👉 Did you know that plastic can only be recycled 1-2 times as the quality of the plastic decreases?

Glass and metal (including aluminium) can be recycled infinitely without losing quality or purity in the product.

SO WHAT HAPPENS TO PLASTIC WHEN IT CAN’T BE RECYCLED ANYMORE?👇

The process of downcycling starts. Plastics that are downcycled result in lower grade products.

A common example of the downcycling process includes transforming plastic bottles into carpeting or fleece fibres. Clothes and carpets can’t go in our recycling bin and often end up in landfill.

While downcycling is better than landfilling or burning plastic, at times it delays an item’s disposal.

Even with recycling, there are limits to how long an item can circulate.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on downcycling👇
